Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors 80’s Costume Party

Look for an awesome party idea? Take your guests back a few decades with an 80’s party. While many of us would never choose to relive that decade, an 80’s themed party is a fly way to get friends together for a bombdigity time. Get all your headbangers, dexters, betties, dudes and dudettes together and party like its 1982. Follow these tips for a righteous time.

What to Wear: The most important part of your 80’s party is what you wear! 80’s were a time of fashion confusion and lucky for you a lot of that confusion has returned to stores for a sexy come back. For ladies, look for some hot color tights and leggings; pair them with acid washed skirts, or oversized t-shirts. High tops, scrunches, fingerless gloves, and lingerie inspired tops are all totally shibby choices.

If you’re a man, look for acid washed jeans, parachute pants, jean jackets, baggie blazers, high tops and penny loafers. Look for great 80’s clothing at your local second hand shop. Save your money for great accessories that you can wear again like tights, leggings, bracelets etc…

Invitations: If you are moderately creative, try making your own invitations. Cover them with 80’s sayings like ‘Eat My Shorts, ‘ ‘Totally Awesome,’ and ‘Bodacious;’ 80’s music and movie icons, or even pictures of yourself and your friends dawning 80’s threads. If you don’t have the time, energy, or creativity to make your own, choose something in flashy loud neon colors.

Decorations: Transform your home or apartment into a gnarly pad with bright neon colors and simple geometric shapes. For some reason the best way to describe 80’s themed decorations is clashing and loud. You can also look for 80’s icon birthday party plates and napkins for a little extra flash.

Music: The music shouldn’t be hard to figure out. If you own satellite radio, check out the all 80’s channels; if not just check out who was topping the charts in the 80’s. Check out your local music stores to find some great used 80’s albums for moderately cheap. You can also rummage through your parents, older brother or sisters, or even your own CD collection to pull of those CDs that have been hidden for so long. Look for ‘fresh’ music by 80’s favorites like Culture Club, Bangles, Billy I 1000 dol, Pat Benatar, Blondie and more.

Food: Well, believe it or not there isn’t a huge selection of killer 80’s party grub. My suggestions are hamburger helpers, chicken nuggets (McDonalds and fast food in general were pretty popular then), and Sloppy Joe’s or Manwhiches. Get a little crazy with some fluffernutter sandwiches.

If you have a sweet tooth you’re absolutely in luck because 80’s candy is relatively easy to come by. Do a little research online or at the library to find out what candies were satisfying sugar cravings. It’s a good idea to go with fun candies that you know will bring back rockin memories. Pop Rocks, Bazooka Gum, candy Buttons, Sour Patch Kids, Swedish Fish, and Bottle Caps just to name a few.

80’s Style

Sep 28, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: 80s Party Time

When I think of the 80’s I think "BIG". The 80’s were the years of big everything; big hair bands, big earrings and big shoulder pads. Oversized clothes and over the top hair were seen all over.

I was in high school in the mid to late 80;s and so was my husband, but we grew up in different states. I grew up in New Jersey and he grew up in Kentucky. Of course these two states are and were very different in any ways. I think in a lot of respects New Jersey was the epitome of that decade. At clubs, on the boardwalk, at the shore, in malls, Jersey girls could be seen with that big hair and those oversized earrings.

Having visited Kentucky several times during the end of the decade, at least in the hair department, they seemed to be keeping up with us. The females in my husband’s family did have big hair, however they all seemed to be more into the very tight perms, at least more so than my friends and family in New Jersey.

I can’t begin to fathom how much hairspray I must have used, probably at least a can a week. Today, if I wanted to go for that same look, I’m not sure I’d know how. Although I certainly had the oversized hair and earrings and wore my share of cosmetics, I tended to be preppie in my wardrobe.

Proms and homecoming were a time to really go all out. Dresses were in every color of the rainbow. Dye able shoes were quite popular because you of course needed your shoes to match your dress. If you were going to wear a teal dress chances were pretty good you were going to need shoes dyed teal to match.

There were so many fads, parachute pants, leggings and stirrup pants were just a few interesting options. Sweat shirts were oversized and off the shoulder. Leg warmers were another fabulous fashion trend of the 80’s, although I never personally got into them. My oldest daughter dressed up as an 80’s girl for Halloween and called the clothes "vintage". It was hard to believe that the things I wore in high school were now considered "vintage". Can you imagine?

Shoes have been an integral part of each decades fashion statement and this was certainly true in the 80’s. I think every girl I know had a pair of white pumps. Flats were big, often adorned with a bow and available in lots of colors. My sister had a pair of Dr. Martens that she wore constantly and all these years later they are still in great shape and not really too different form the Dr. Martens today. Chuck Taylors and Keds were staples in many wardrobes and Chucks came in so many fantastic colors you could always find one you liked. For the preppy people, penny loafers were a must. Surely anyone that grew up in that era also remembers Jelly’s, truly an economical sandal.

The 80’s will always bring back fond memories for me with all of the big hair, fashion and bands. Even if my daughter thinks the 80’s look is "vintage", it was a truly a great time!
